A traffic stop in Garland led to a tragic turn of events when an individual sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a foot chase with police. The incident occurred Monday night off Bay Shore Drive. According to a social media post by the Garland Police Department, a routine traffic stop for violations spiraled into a more severe situation when the officer on scene reportedly developed probable cause to believe narcotics were present.
During their attempt at conducting the investigation, which was initially for observed traffic violations, the front passenger made an abrupt decision to exit the vehicle and escape on foot. The subsequent chase by a backup officer resulted in a gunshot, which arose just moments after the suspect fled. Found collapsed, the officers tended to the wounded with life-saving attempts until the fire department personnel arrived. The individual, whose gunshot was later determined to be self-inflicted, was declared dead at a hospital nearby.
No law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the sequence of these events. Besides the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest of the deceased, a stolen firearm was recovered at the scene right next to him. This discovery further complicated the narrative, confirming the firearm's illegal status as stolen out of Plano.
