An investigation is underway by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) following an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Irvin Street in Cornelia, Georgia. The incident, which took place around 5:50 p.m. last Sunday, resulted in 33-year-old Christian Drake Shurtleff being shot and injured by a law enforcement officer; however, no officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
As per the release from the GBI, the situation unfolded when the Cornelia Police Department received a 911 call reporting that an SUV had crashed into a business. On arrival, responders found not only the damaged vehicle but also Shurtleff and his 7-year-old daughter inside. While the young girl was safely removed from the wreckage without harm, Shurtleff became uncooperative and engaged in a physical altercation with an officer, leading to the shooting.
Shurtleff, a resident of Mt. Airy, GA, was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. In connection with the incident, he now faces charges of felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and additional charges are expected to follow. Alongside the GBI's investigation into the shooting itself, the Georgia State Patrol is examining the circumstances surrounding the vehicle accident. The conclusion of GBI’s independent investigation will mark the turnover of the case files to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.
