A community reels from a profound loss as it prepares to say its final goodbyes to Evan Dunn, a 33-year-old Golden police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Flags are to be flown at half-staff in tribute. As reported by KKTV, a memorial service is set for Wednesday morning, and will gather those touched by the tragedy to collectively mourn and reminisce.
The solemn occasion follows a tragic incident on the night of Nov. 6 when Dunn and his colleague, Bethany Grusing, were struck by a car while they were tending to a crash scene in Golden. A driver, reportedly named Stephen Geer and identified as an assistant professor of engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, drove into the crash scene. The collision tragically resulted in Dunn's death and left Grusing with serious injuries, rendering her currently unable to work, according to KKTV.
In the spirit of solidarity and support, the MC-1 Foundation and the Colorado Fallen Hero Foundation are extending their assistance to the fallen officer's family and the injured. "It’s a great honor to be a part of something like this," MC-1 Foundation President Mark Miller told FOX31’s Greg Nieto. He further added, in a sentiment captured by KDVR, "We want to honor the family, obviously. We want to honor the city of Golden. But most especially, we want to honor Officer Dunn, by providing the best memorial service we can, and that’s what we’re gonna do, tomorrow."
As part of the community engagement, a patrol vehicle sits outside Golden City Hall at 911 10th St., serving as a symbolic vessel for the community's tributes, be it caring notes or other expressions of support for Dunn’s family and the Golden Police Department. 9NEWS informs those who wish to offer monetary donations can do so through the Colorado Fallen Hero Foundation, ensuring that Dunn's legacy is honored and his family supported in these most trying times.
