A fire lieutenant from Grand Rapids Township is currently hospitalized after suffering an attack by an armed individual in an unsettling incident over the weekend. WOOD-TV reports that yesterday, just before 4 p.m., the firefighter was assaulted by a 40-year-old Cedar Springs man who had earlier consumed illicit substances, and in his possession, a gun. The encounter occurred at the fire station located at 1836 E. Beltline Ave. NE, near Knapp Street NE.

According to FOX 17, the lieutenant initially let the man into the station's garage under the belief he was there to work on the concrete, a detail corroborated by the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). The situation rapidly escalated as it became apparent that the individual was not only suicidal but also violent. In a press release, the KCSO stated, "It was learned that the man was suicidal, had consumed illicit drugs, was in possession of a firearm."

The dramatic turn of events prompted the lieutenant to request emergency backup, and upon arrival, deputies found the man "actively assaulting the lieutenant" as detailed by FOX 17. First responders were able to intervene, restraining the attacker and taking him into custody. The incident left the fire lieutenant with a series of injuries for which he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, remains in custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility. It is expected, that the Kent County Prosecutor's Office will review the case.
