In response to the concerning rates of sex crimes against women, the Gwinnett County Police Department has taken a proactive stance by providing a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course set to start in January. This self-defense program focuses on equipping women and girls, ages 16 and up, with the necessary skills to defend themselves against potential assaults. According to FOX5 Atlanta, the department has experienced an increase in enrollment following the tragic murder and attempted rape of nursing student Laken Riley in Athens.
The RAD course, as outlined by Corporal Andres Comacho of the Gwinnett County Police Department in an interview with FOX5 Atlanta, begins with instructional components on risk awareness, reduction, and avoidance. Subsequently, it transitions into hands-on tactical training. Comacho noted, "Every single day we’ll practice different kinds of techniques," acknowledging that the classes cater to a wide demographic, including those "as old as their fitness and capability allow." Women under the age of 18 are required to be accompanied by a female family member who is at least 18 years old.
This comprehensive 12-hour training, delivered across four sessions, concludes with a live simulation providing an invaluable experience by enabling students to apply their newly learned skills in a controlled setting. As reported by AccessWDUN, the Gwinnett County Police believe this practical component of the course is crucial for building confidence in the participants' ability to defend themselves.
The RAD course will be held on January 21, 23, 28, and 30, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Gwinnett Police Training Center. Participants must attend all sessions. For more information or to sign up, contact the police department at 678-442-6520 or [email protected].
