In a significant boost to state law enforcement ranks, ten new deputy sheriffs have completed their training and joined the Department of Law Enforcement in Hawai‘i. The graduation took place in Iwilei, marking a milestone as the first recruit class to graduate since Department of Law Enforcement began operations earlier this year.
Department of Law Enforcement Director Jordan Lowe was on hand to administer the oath to the fresh graduates. "It's an honor to administer the oath of office to these new deputies," Lowe said, according to a Department of Law Enforcement press release. The deputies have completed a rigorous six-month training program, preparing them for their new roles in the enforcement of law and maintenance of public safety.
The training received by the deputies was extensive and robust, comprising over 1,000 hours across various critical areas of law enforcement. These areas included constitutional and criminal law, ethical use of force, physical fitness, traffic enforcement, firearms training, and physical control tactics. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the deputies are well-equipped to handle the demands of the job, as reported by the Department of Law Enforcement.
Before taking to their assignments, the new deputy sheriffs will undergo a 12-week field orientation with certified training officers, honing the skills they have learned at the academy. Of the new graduates, two deputies will be stationed in the Maui Court Section while the others will serve in the Airport Section, Harbors Section, and Central Patrol Section on O‘ahu, as per the Department of Law Enforcement.
