A chaotic motor vehicle pursuit unfolded on the streets of Pittsfield yesterday morning leading to a crash, a power outage, and an arrest. According to the Pittsfield Police Department, at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, officers attempted to stop a car for civil traffic infractions near West St and Edwin St. The driver, identified as Anthony Winters, 27, initially complied before making the fateful decision to flee, brushing against an officer as he took off.

The high-speed chase that ensued saw Winters racing along West St and then veering onto Jason St. It was in the 200 block of Jason St that Winters' vehicle careered out of control, striking a telephone pole with such force that it snapped, triggering a power outage and igniting the vehicle. The subsequent blaze required the response of the Pittsfield Fire Department. Despite the dramatic scenes, the street was reopened around 2:30 p.m. after several hours of closure for repairs.

Winters attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended by the authorities near the crash site. Following the incident, he received medical attention for minor injuries at the Berkshire Medical Center before being discharged. Remarkably, the police officer involved was unscathed and resumed duties shortly after the encounter.

Now facing an array of charges, Winters must contend with more than just traffic violations. According to the police report, he has been charged with numerous motor vehicle offenses as well as Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon—namely, a motor vehicle.
