A high-speed chase on Interstate 75 in Catoosa County ended with the death of a 22-year-old driver and serious injuries to a passenger. On Tuesday night, Georgia State Patrol observed Hugo Urbano Chavez driving a black 2015 Infiniti Q50 at 114 miles per hour northbound near mile marker 342, leading to a pursuit, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
Chavez refused to stop for police, leading to a chase. He lost control of his car near exit 348, causing a fatal crash. His passenger, Angel Aleman, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital. The trooper's car also crashed during the pursuit, as reported by Fox 5 Atlanta.
A recent crash after a high-speed chase has raised concerns. An investigation by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution found that more than half of the 6,700 pursuits by the Georgia State Patrol between 2019 and 2023 ended in crashes, causing 1,900 injuries and 63 deaths. Georgia State Patrol defends its pursuit policy, saying it is "proportionally responsive" to crimes like street racing and speeding, and is based on "state and federal law, judicial rulings, dedicated training and sound principles of law enforcement." The Georgia State Patrol’s Collision Reconstruction Team is now investigating the crash that killed Chavez and injured Aleman.
