Yesterday afternoon, a chemical spill at 4210 Waialae Avenue in Waialae summoned the response of the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD), as reported by the Honolulu Fire Department's official website. The incident led to the evacuation of a retail space after occupants complained of throat irritation, potentially linked to the spill.
As per the HFD, a 911 call was received at 12:52 p.m., and the first unit arrived on the scene by 12:59 p.m., quickly beginning the investigation. A Hazardous Materials Unit was promptly deployed to identify the substance causing discomfort. After extensive testing, it was determined that the air quality was affected by suspended particles near the affected area.
A total of three HFD units, including the Hazardous Materials team and 11 personnel in total, worked on mitigating the hazardous situation. As stated in the official update, the crews took measures to contain and clean the substance, ensuring the air was safe for re-entry.
At around 3:30 p.m., the area was declared safe, and the public was allowed to return to the retail space. The cleanup effort was effectively contained, with no need for medical attention for the occupants exposed to the substance. Throughout this event, all HFD crew members remained unscathed and were accounted for with no injuries.
