A tragic unfolding, as a 79-year-old pedestrian, struck by a vehicle earlier this month in Kalihi, has now passed away from her injuries, marking a somber tally in Honolulu's traffic fatality statistics for 2024. Hawaii News Now reports that the incident, which happened on November 8 around 4:10 p.m. near Eluwene and Kalihi streets, has culminated in the death of the woman who was initially treated for severe injuries, including a head injury.
Despite this death occurring there stands a noticeable decline in traffic fatalities, with this year's count at 42 compared to 51 at this same point in 2023, an update by KITV clarifies, yet the decrease offers little solace in the face of such loss, and it raises concern over pedestrian safety especially for the elderly in urban traffic scenarios.
The authorities have not yet released the identity of the woman, and the Honolulu Police Department continues its investigation into the circumstances that led to this fateful encounter, as stated in the reports from both KITV and Hawaii News Now. Emergency responders at the initial scene included Honolulu police, firefighters, and EMS who worked to treat and transport the victim with the hope of her recovery.
