Early Wednesday morning, two men from Houston were arrested for attempting to burglarize an ATM on San Antonio's South Side. The police were alerted by an alarm at the Security Service Federal Credit Union on Southeast Military Drive. When officers arrived, they found three people trying to steal an ATM but detained only two. The suspects, 25-year-olds Dexter Robinson and Nevon Barnes, were later identified.
Police have not disclosed the tools used in the attempted theft aside from a vehicle, opting to not fully detail the attempted burglary methods. However, the technique was sophisticated enough for officials to believe the suspects "knew what they were doing," per a statement obtained by KSAT. The investigation into the attempted burglary is ongoing, with one suspect still at large.
This latest attempt is among a rising trend of ATM-related crimes in the area, with pattern emerging of criminals traveling from Houston to San Antonio to carry out such offenses. According to a report by KENS 5, the San Antonio Police Department has noticed an increase of these incidents in recent weeks.
As the holiday season approaches, SAPD urges the public to vigilantly guard their transactions when withdrawing large sums of money. "The bad guys may be watching them," and citizens should be extra-careful, police warned. No further information regarding the third suspect or the amount of money potentially stolen was available at the time of the report, according to KSAT.
