Gunfire disrupted the quietude of a northeast Houston neighborhood late last night when a homeowner shot an intruder who had forcibly entered his home and commenced an assault. Houston police arrived at the 7400 block of Jay Street after a distressing call just after 11:30 p.m. A scene of apparent self-defense was what they encountered, where a man in his 30s lay with multiple gunshot wounds, as reported by CW39.
An investigation that has only started to unfurl the events of the night suggests that the intruder was previously an inhabitant of the household he breached. The homeowner, nearly 70 years old, was forced to act when the situation violently turned against him. "The homeowner fired multiple shots at the individual who forced himself in his home striking him multiple times," detailed Lt. Horelica from the Houston Police Department, according to a statement obtained by KHOU. The intruder was subsequently transported to a local area hospital by the Houston Fire Department.
At this point, HPD has refrained from prematurely labeling the individuals involved as either suspect or victim amid the ongoing investigation. "The male that was shot is in his 30s. The male that did the shooting is close to 70," he told KHOU.
