A Houston pastor, Robert L. Carter, stands accused of years of sexual abuse involving an underage family member spanning over a decade, with allegations including rape and impregnation. In a court appearance set for today, Carter is expected for a pre-trial hearing regarding these charges. Last year in October, the story broke when allegations surfaced against the former pastor and bishop.
As reported by Click2Houston, the abuse began when the girl was only seven years old, and escalated to the point where she gave birth in a closet at the age of 14. The baby, as described by a family member, was then taken by Carter and left at a fire station. This family member's identity has been concealed to protect the victim's anonymity.
Meanwhile, documents obtained by ABC13 point to a sustained pattern of abuse which includes allegations that Carter forced himself on the young girl repeatedly, often while other family members were in proximity but asleep.
According to ABC13, Carter is also accused of having sexually assaulted the victim on the way to school, and in the parking lots and churches where he proclaimed a message of faith and trust. The exhaustive nature of the abuse, detailed in court records, indicates that the accused not only preyed upon the victim in private but also brazenly, in venues associated with community trust and sanctity.
According to a family member of the victim, the young woman is now struggling with the lasting impact of this trauma, "was just tired, she was tired of being afraid." Her relative characterizes her strength and resilience in the face of these harrowing circumstances, stating, "I've never met anyone, a woman stronger than that woman there," according to the interview given to Click2Houston. This case has prompted further attention on the issue of sexual abuse, and the urge for other victims to come forward if they have suffered similar traumas.
