A West Houston community is reeling from a tragedy that unfolded earlier today when a mother and her young child were found dead in their apartment. According to Click2Houston, Houston Police Department (HPD) officers were alerted to a disturbance around 2:45 a.m. at an apartment complex on Richmond Avenue and Westminster Plaza Drive in Westchase. Upon arrival, a man with blood on him was detained at the scene.
The investigation, still in its infancy, has provided few details to the public thus far. Officers, after entering the apartment, discovered the victims - an unidentified woman believed to be aged between 25 and 30, and her daughter, estimated to be between 2 and 4 years old. The relation of the detained man to the deceased has not been disclosed, but he remains in police custody for questioning.
In a follow-up by KHOU 11, HPD Assistant Chief James Bryant explained that there had been an earlier call regarding a disturbance at the same location. A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous described hearing what sounded like an argument, saying, "It sounded to me like people were drunk coming in after Thanksgiving, you know, celebration somewhere."
The exact cause of death for the mother and child is pending, as authorities continue their investigation. The anonymous neighbor recounted how the disturbance was soon followed by the arrival of emergency services. According to KHOU 11, he did eventually see firefighters, police and an ambulance show up at the scene. This ongoing story has shocked locals, leaving the Westchase community looking for answers as they mourn the loss of one of their own and her young child.
