An unsettling find along the banks of the Delaware River has Philadelphia’s Fishtown community and local authorities seeking answers. As reported by NBC Philadelphia, human remains were discovered close to the 1300 block of Beach Street, in proximity to the Delaware River. The bones spotted by a passerby late Sunday afternoon have been confirmed to be human leg bones, specifically a femur and a tibia.
Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace confirmed that the bones have been there "for some time" but the identity of the victim, including their sex or race, is still unknown. "It's unclear whether or not there was a criminal incident that precipitated this," Inspector Pace stated, "so at this point now it’s just a matter of conducting a forensic examination and trying to determine who these bones might belong to." Meanwhile, the recovered bones have been sent to the Medical Examiner's Office for further analysis.
FOX 29 and 6ABC reported that bones were found at Penn Treaty Park, a public space in Fishtown. Local police have yet to determine if the remains are linked to any criminal activity. Officials confirmed that the bones appear to have washed up from the river, but the age and gender of the individual are still unknown.
