An incarcerated man was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the Calaveras County Sheriff Detention Facility. According to an announcement by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office on their official Facebook page, 43-year-old Valley Springs resident Benjamin Nava was discovered on Sunday evening by officers, potentially suffering from a medical event in his cell. The Facebook post outlines the immediate response, stating, "Custodial staff quickly initiated life-saving efforts as Paramedics responded and assumed life-saving measures."
In the continued response to this incident, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office mentioned that "Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased." As part of the process following such incidents, a comprehensive investigation is being carried out by investigators from both the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office to understand the circumstances thoroughly. Ensuring adherence to protocol, the Sheriff's Office is coordinating notifications with the state governing agencies that have oversight over correctional facilities.
According to the statement by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office, there were no signs of foul play observed at the scene. They assisted the Coroner's Office in the process of notifying Nava's next of kin. The transparency in the proceedings comes with a note of compassion as the Sheriff's Office expressed their condolences, saying, "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Nava during this difficult time." The office assured that more information would be shared with the public as the investigation advances and allows for facts to be laid out clearly.
