The peace of California State Prison, Sacramento, was shattered when inmate Ronald D. Yandell, 62, allegedly attacked two officers with an improvised weapon. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is currently investigating the incident, regarding it as an attempted homicide. During the morning routine last Friday, as Yandell was being escorted back to his cell, he took a stand with the makeshift weapon following a visit to the institution's central health building.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation report, one of the officers responding to the incident had to discharge pepper spray three times before Yandell relinquished the weapon. Once under control, Yandell was secured in restraints and safely removed from the scene, at which point an improvised weapon was recovered. Following the scuffle, medical staff attended to Yandell, confirming that he did not sustain injuries. Fortunately, none of the prison staff were harmed during the altercation.

The Sacramento County District Attorney's office is set to receive the case for the consideration of felony prosecution. Yandell, who is currently serving a life sentence with the option of parole for first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, entered the SAC system back on March 18, 2004, after being sentenced in Contra Costa County.
