A search warrant executed by the Rocky Mount Police Department early yesterday morning led to one person being shot. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the incident to determine what led to the gunfire, according to the department.
As reported by QC News, around 8:11 a.m., Narcotics and Violent Crime units from the Rocky Mount Police Department were at a home on the 1700 block of Windsor Street when the situation escalated, leading to multiple shots being fired. Four people were inside, including a man, aged 19-20, who was injured but whose wounds were not life-threatening, according to Chief Robert Hassell.
Rocky Mount Police Department has not specified who fired the initial shots; no officers were harmed during the incident; the injured man received timely medical attention at a local hospital and has been released, as mentioned by abc11.
Amid community concerns, Chief Hassell acknowledged that some questions remain unanswered. When asked if an officer fired their weapon, he confirmed, "Yep, the officer did fire his weapon." The officer's identity is being withheld, but Hassell noted the officer has been placed on administrative duty with pay during the ongoing SBI investigation, according to QC News.
The details of the search warrant have not been released, but the incident is being treated as an officer-involved shooting to ensure a thorough and objective investigation, as noted by Spectrum News.
