In a recent shift of library leadership, Cobb County has welcomed Keith Schuermann as the incoming Library Director, succeeding Helen Poyer who is retiring after a steadfast tenure of 18 years. Beginning his new duties on December 2, Schuermann, with over two decades of experience in library management and his last post overseeing the Troup-Harris Library System, has been tasked to uphold and expand the library system's acclamatory services which earned it the title of "Library of the Year", as reported by Cobb County Communications.
County Manager Dr. Jackie McMorris recommended Schuermann for the role, noting his vast experience, and said, “With over 20 years of leadership in library systems, including his most recent role as director of the Troup-Harris Library System, Keith brings a wealth of expertise to Cobb,” a sentiment which resonates with Schuermann's own zeal for his new position, wherein he plans not only to sustain but also amplify the library's excellence to national recognition. Schuermann told Cobb County Communications during the board meeting, "What sold me on working with Cobb County was the people I met and the conversations I had about this opportunity," adding, “Your library system is the Library of the Year in the state, and your staff exemplifies that excellence. My goal is to elevate that excellence from state-level recognition to national prominence.”
Helen Poyer will work alongside Schuermann during a transition period before her retirement to ensure a smooth handover. The recent board meeting celebrated Poyer’s achievements, including launching the Bookmobile program. Her family surprised attendees, and library staff joined the celebration. In honor of her contributions, the program will be renamed the Helen Poyer Cobb County Bookmobile, continuing her work in serving underserved communities.
