The Kent Police Department has found itself in the middle of a social media maelstrom after an inflammatory post was reshared on their X account. This originally shared image depicted two military-clad women, assumed to be members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), detaining a nearly naked, bound, and blindfolded man with a caption, "This is going to be the most iconic photo of this war," as reported by KOMO News.
After being up for 40 hours, the Kent Police's X account was deleted but was reinstated a few hours later with updates. Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner acknowledged the mistake, "It was a mistake" and confirmed the post's removal after being contacted by KIRO 7 News. The incident began to unfold at around 8 p.m. Monday, when KIRO 7 News was notified about the controversial post. The department was subsequently alerted by the news station the following afternoon.
In an effort to clarify the situation, the Kent Police Department issued a statement on Facebook, elucidating the event as an accidental reposting. According to their exposition, obtained by MyNorthwest, the repost remained visible to some X users for more than 36 hours. The department faced significant criticism for reengaging with such content, given its sensitive nature and the potential impact on the community.
KIRO 7 went on to detail that they reached out to the Kent Police Department and Kent Mayor Dana Ralph on Tuesday afternoon about the post. Within an hour of their communication, Assistant Chief Kasner reverted with the admission of the error, and an assurance that the post would be dealt with.
