If you want to get outside in Missouri, mark November 7 on your calendar. Knob Noster State Park is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. to open a new section of the Spirit Trail. This event highlights the connection between the two communities.
The Spirit Trail started in the 1990s to create a pedestrian and bike-friendly route between Warrensburg and Whiteman Air Force Base. In 2012, the Johnson County Trail Coalition, now the Spirit Trail Coalition, helped move the project forward. Together with various partners, they developed a four-phase master plan that could take up to ten years to complete, as noted in a Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
The Spirit Trail construction began in August 2017 and progressed steadily, with the eastern section ribbon-cutting completed by October 2018. Now, the trail is finished, offering a seamless route from Warrensburg through Knob Noster State Park to Knob Noster and Whiteman Air Force Base. It’s a great achievement that enhances walkability and bikeability in the area.
"We are excited to see this come to fruition," said David Kelly, director of Missouri State Parks, to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. His statement reflects more than just a sense of accomplishment. This new artery doesn't just facilitate transit; it opens up a whole avenue to connect with nature and the great outdoors.
