Soulard Shooting Near Carroll Street Kills One, Injures Another, Police Say

A man is dead and another is recovering in stable condition after a shooting near Soulard Park late Monday night, the latest in a string of violent incidents to strike the historic St. Louis neighborhood this year. Officers responded to the intersection of Carroll Street and South 7th Street around 10 p.m. and found the two men, one of whom did not survive.

According to First Alert 4, police say the surviving man is in stable condition, and investigators are not currently looking for anyone else believed to be involved in the shooting. The remains of the man killed are under investigation, and no further details about his identity have been released. First Alert 4 has indicated it will continue providing updates as the case develops.

The statement that police are not seeking additional suspects suggests investigators may be treating the incident as a closed confrontation between the two men rather than an outside attack, though authorities have not publicly characterized it further. Any formal determination of cause and manner of death will fall to the medical examiner, whose review is required under Missouri law whenever a death occurs under violent or suspicious circumstances, per Missouri Revised Statutes Section 58.451. A Neighborhood Already on Edge

Monday's shooting adds to an unusually violent stretch for Soulard in 2026. Just two blocks away on Carroll Street, 20-year-old Darwin Maldonado Vargas was fatally shot in the neck outside a bar during an early morning fight in June, an incident for which police released surveillance video seeking witnesses. Soulard has also seen fatal shootings elsewhere in the neighborhood this year. In January, a 22-year-old man was killed inside a business in the 1500 block of South 8th Street, leading to murder charges against a suspect. And on the same date as Monday's shooting, police were separately investigating a homicide inside a Soulard home on South 9th Street, which the St. Louis Post-Dispatch later determined, along with a death on Interstate 55, to be a murder-suicide.

Community Security Resources in Play

Soulard's patchwork of tax-funded security tools could factor into the investigation. The neighborhood falls under SLMPD District 3, or Central Patrol, and receives supplemental off-duty police coverage from private security firm The City's Finest, along with an SLMPD substation at Barton and 11th Streets, according to the Soulard Special Business District. The Soulard Restoration Group also maintains a voluntary, confidential security camera registry that links home and business surveillance feeds directly to SLMPD District 3 liaison officers during active investigations, infrastructure that has aided detectives in prior Soulard cases.

The violence in Soulard stands in contrast to citywide trends. St. Louis homicides fell to 139 in 2025, the lowest annual total since 2013, while overall violent crime dropped 16% year-over-year, according to SLMPD CompStat data reported by KSDK. The department also recorded an 84% homicide clearance rate last year, a figure department leadership has pointed to as evidence of investigative effectiveness even as isolated neighborhoods like Soulard continue to see repeated shootings.
