A man has died after being shot late Thursday night in St. Louis, in what police are treating as one of two homicides reported within hours of each other in the city. Officers were called to the scene around 11:30 p.m. and found the victim critically wounded before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
According to FOX 2, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1200 block of Dillon Drive, just south of downtown. KMOV, however, identified the location as the 1200 block of Dillon Street — the two outlets differ on the exact street name for the shooting scene. Homicide detectives are investigating the case, per the station's report.
The man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries, police said. As of Friday morning, it remained unclear whether investigators had identified any suspects, and the station's report notes that the investigation was ongoing.
A Second Overnight Homicide Across Town
Hours after the shooting, officers responded to a separate incident around 2 a.m. Friday in the 5900 block of Dressell Avenue after receiving reports of a stabbing. When they arrived, they found a man dead, according to the same FOX 2 account. Investigations into both incidents were ongoing, and it was unclear whether suspects had been identified in either case, per the outlet.
Homicides Trending Down Citywide in 2026
The overnight violence comes even as St. Louis has reported a broader decline in killings this year. The city recorded 63 homicides through June 30, compared with 71 during the same period in 2025, according to St. Louis Public Radio. That put the city's first-half homicide total at its lowest level since 2014, and 40% below the 2020 peak of 105 killings, the station reported.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Tracy has said that “90% of our murders are by gunshot in the city,” per St. Louis Public Radio. The outlet also cited a Council on Criminal Justice review that found the national rate of reported homicides fell 21% in 2025 compared with 2024, suggesting the local decline mirrors a wider trend.
Pattern of Mass Shooting Incidents
St. Louis has also seen bursts of gun violence involving multiple victims in recent memory. In one span, at least 11 people were shot — two of them fatally — over a 12-hour stretch of attacks in the city, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. At least four of those victims were reported in critical condition at the time, the newspaper said.
No details about the identity or age of the man killed Thursday night have been released, and police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
