In Lakeland, Florida, a 5-year-old girl lost her life Thursday evening when the car she was in caught fire following a crash. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that a father with his two children were involved in a single-vehicle accident at approximately 5 PM at the intersection of Lake Parker Drive East and Broadway Street, as per Daily Ridge. The vehicle, identified as a white Kia sedan, veered off the road into a wooded area and struck a tree before igniting.
Witnesses at the scene, alongside the 30-year-old father from Winter Haven, frantically worked to rescue the trapped children from the back seat of the burning car. "Tragically," the little girl perished in the flames while her 3-year-old brother was successfully pulled to safety, according to an account detailed by WTSP. In the process, a Good Samaritan who had tried to assist also sustained burns and, together with the father and the rescued son, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The events leading up to the crash are still under investigation by the PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit, which responds to all fatal crashes in the county. The first responders, which included Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Polk County Fire Rescue, were met with the daunting task of firefighting and emergency care at the calamitous scene detailed by WFLA News.
