In a recent federal jury decision, Damion Clarke, 33, from Lakeland, faced a conviction for conspiracy to distribute cocaine. The trial, lasting three days, left Clarke with the potential to serve up to 20 years in prison, with a sentencing date set for March 12, 2025. The Department of Justice reported that Clarke was found guilty of assisting a Jamaican Criminal Enterprise in distributing drugs throughout Central Florida.
The FBI's Orlando Safe Streets Task Force led the investigation, utilizing a confidential source who had identified Clarke's connections to the organization. Despite the source being anonymous, they revealed Clarke’s willingness to introduce them to Rafick Gilpin, another major player in the cocaine distribution chain, and facilitate their criminal communication. According to evidence brought forth during the trial, Clarke served as the middleman for various drug deals, ranging from ounces to a kilogram, and even firearms, all of which took place between November 2021 and July 2022. The purchases were facilitated with the help of this middleman for the confidential source and an undercover agent in Orlando.
The implications of this case extend beyond Clarke's actions – Gilpin was previously sentenced to ten years in federal prison on August 8, 2023, for related offenses, including possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, the Justice Department reported. Clarke played a pivotal role in bridging these illegal transactions, which were severe enough to catch the attention of federal law enforcement. The investigation was a combined effort between the FBI and local law enforcement, spanning the Orlando Police Department and the Apopka Police Department, all prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Sartoian.
