Following the tragic loss of a valued officer, the Las Cruces Police Department has reported substantial results from Operation Not in Vain, a three-month intensive crime reduction initiative. The operation, conducted in memory of Officer Jonah Hernandez who was killed in the line of duty on February 11, has led to 330 arrests and the issuance of more than 1,200 traffic citations. According to the City of Las Cruces, this collaborative effort is a significant step toward reinforcing community safety.
"The success of this operation underscores the importance of collaboration among state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies," Las Cruces Police Department Chief Jeremy Story noted, as per City of Las Cruces. He acknowledged that the collective efforts are essential to make a positive impact on the safety of the community. The Chief also emphasized that there is still much work to be done to fully ensure justice and safety for all residents of Las Cruces.
Detailed figures released from the operation, which commenced on August 5 and concluded on November 8, include 127 felony arrests, 114 misdemeanor arrests, 89 criminal citations and completion of 29 warrants. During the crackdown, officers also seized 25 stolen vehicles, 24 narcotics hauls, and 12 firearms. An alarming amount of illegal drugs, over 3,200 fentanyl pills, and around 54 pounds of methamphetamine were confiscated. The extensive campaign also included proactive community engagement, with 607 consensual contacts and 539 meetings with local businesses.
Chief Troy Weisler of the New Mexico State Police declared the operation to be a testament to the collaborative force of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. "By working together, we've successfully taken dangerous criminals, illegal firearms and narcotics off the streets of our communities, making New Mexico safer for all," Weisler said, as obtained by City of Las Cruces. He also vowed to continue to stand united in the fight against crime. This commitment, he declared, aims to ensure that Officer Jonah Hernandez’s sacrifice was not in vain.
Operation Not in Vain specifically targeted violent and property crimes, persons with outstanding warrants, repeat offenders, and traffic violations. In addition to the enforcement-focused aspect, the operation had a community outreach component, with officers engaging Las Cruces residents and businesses, reinforcing a joint commitment to public safety. Officer Hernandez, a two-year veteran of the Las Cruces Police Department, originally from El Paso, Texas, is remembered for his service through the dedication and outcomes of this significant police operation.
