A late-night collision in Lake County claimed the life of a young motorcyclist and left another severely injured, officials said. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a pickup truck traveling the wrong way on State Road 44 collided with two motorcycles shortly before midnight.

The fatal incident unfolded when a Ram pickup, operated by a 49-year-old Eustis man, was headed westbound but, tragically, in the eastbound lane. The driver's headlights soon became the last sight for a 20-year-old from Umatilla riding a 2024 Harley-Davidson Sportster. In an attempt to urgently avoid the impending tragedy, the other motorcyclist, a 41-year-old also from Umatilla, was forced to lay down his bike on the road, ClickOrlando reported.

The collision's impact was immediate and lethal for the younger rider, who was pronounced dead at the scene, while his fellow rider suffered serious injuries. The injured motorcyclist, unlike the deceased, who was wearing a helmet, was not. He was rushed to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital after the crash, as detailed by WESH.

Investigations are currently ongoing, but no charges have been filed yet. The pick-up driver involved was not transported, indicating no immediate injuries.
