In a recent development that escalated during a narcotics investigation in Lincoln Park, a police officer and a suspect were both shot and are now in stable condition. The shootings took place yesterday afternoon in the 26400 block of Outer Drive, near a former hospital site, according to The Detroit News.
A Lincoln Park officer, whose identity has not been released, was shot in the lower body during the unfolding situation. The suspect was also hit, yet details regarding their injury are not fully disclosed, reports Mike Shaw, Michigan State Police 1st Lt. Tyanna Horn, a local resident, recounted hearing gunshots and seeing the suspect attempting to flee from officers. "Cops tried to tell him to stop running but he didn't stop and they shot him down," Horn told The Detroit News.
The police were in the midst of a drug operation when gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, a person of interest in the investigation, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. During the confrontation, it remains unclear who fired the first shot or the total number of shots fired.
Afterward, the suspect tried to evade the police, leading to more shots being fired. "We saw a Black male running this way and the police surrounded him and told him to stop running," a nearby resident told FOX 2 Detroit. "And he wouldn't stop running so they shot him. And when they shot him, we were scared … we ran in the house, we didn't know what to do." The aftermath of the event led to a blockage of Outer Drive for evidence collection and the impounding of a silver pick-up truck.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, and Michigan State Police's Special Investigation Section was called in for further assistance, according to ClickOnDetroit. The identities of those involved have not been released as the investigation continues.
