As the year winds down, Los Angeles County's own District Attorney George Gascón takes a moment to look back at the strides made under his administration toward justice reform. With Thanksgiving just gone by, Gascón touches upon his office's initiatives that have helped shape a county more attuned to equity and fairness in the eyes of the law, his office reported.

Keeping communities safe has been a key theme of Gascón’s tenure. His office has managed to uphold or increase felony prosecutions for serious crimes including homicides and sex crimes, while rethinking misdemeanor prosecutions that could unfairly penalize nonviolent, often marginalized people. Gascón’s approach to retail theft has yielded tangible results, with 1,500 cases filed since 2021 — nearly one-third, in 2024 alone, and an 89% conviction rate keeping the community's economy stable. He has made stalwart efforts on state legislation, supporting stronger penalties for organized retail theft among others.

Gascón has also paid particular attention to community-based violence reduction, embedding prosecutors in local police stations to tackle high-profile cases. This includes a 37-count indictment concerning violent shootings across Inglewood, Compton, and Los Angeles, according to a recent briefing from his office. In the mire of a post-Roe v. Wade America, the LA DA has firmly sided with reproductive rights, refusing to prosecute those seeking or providing abortions, and championing California's legislative efforts to broaden care access and prevent personal health information sharing.

On the youth justice front, over 747 young individuals have been kept out of adult courts since Gascón took office, signaling a commitment to interchange punitive measures with rehabilitative ones. The Conviction Integrity Unit under his administration has grown threefold, leading to 15 exonerations. Reflecting on these exonerations, Gascón stated, "I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made in creating a more fair, transparent, and accountable justice system."

Another significant aspect of Gascón’s reign has been the step-up in holding law enforcement to account. His office charged close to 150 officers for crimes ranging from DUI to voluntary manslaughter, a marked increase from the past administrations and progress towards greater police accountability. Moreover, his prosecution strategy included more cases arising from on-duty officer-involved shootings in his four-year span than his predecessors managed in decades combined.

With a steady hand to assist victims and survivors, the District Attorney’s Office under Gascón expanded its victim service capacity by hiring additional representatives. It also improved trauma-informed care for survivors, exemplified by the rapid response provided in the wake of the Monterey Park Lunar New Year shooting — a tragedy that required an immediate and sensitive approach to victim assistance. And in the realm of environmental and labor justice, his office has filed crucial cases against companies for hazardous pollution and established a Labor Justice Unit to stand against wage theft.

Engagement with the community is not an aspect Gascón has overlooked. He’s opened up the DA's Office doors, holding over 100 community events and town halls and establishing seven community advisory boards. Each action, he insists, is a step toward realizing a more humane and equitable system — fighting to ensure that those who’ve historically been left behind have their voices heard. The path forward, as Gascón clears his throat for the future, is one of further reform: "The work is far from over. Justice is not static—it evolves. It requires us to listen and lead from a place of compassion and courage."
