Two gang members have been sentenced for their roles in a violent robbery that severely injured an elderly couple at a Thousand Oaks mall earlier this year. Corey Thomas of Los Angeles and Jonathan Requejo of Inglewood, both 18, were each handed two-year sentences in state prison,  the Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced, according to KTLA. The duo, documented Crips gang members, pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, including second-degree robbery and elder abuse.

The convictions stem from a shocking incident on June 27, where security footage from the Oaks Mall Macy's store showed Thomas, Requejo, and three juveniles attacking the elderly shoppers. The assailants made off with a Rolex watch, a purse, and a cell phone, leaving the victims with considerable physical injuries, as per KTLA.

A high-speed police chase ensued when the group fled the scene and refused to stop for law enforcement. In a reckless attempt to evade capture, a loaded firearm was thrown from the vehicle during their flight along the southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway, FOX LA detailed.

Ultimately, the pursuit concluded when the suspects' car stopped and several members attempted to flee on foot. Police successfully apprehended all individuals involved. Following a statement made by Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Deputy District Attorney Hayley Moyer underscored the weight of the verdict: "Every citizen in Ventura County deserves the right to be safe and secure while going about their day." She added, "While we cannot reverse the irreparable harm done to these victims, we hope the sentences today sends a message that we will prosecute those responsible for violent crimes to the fullest extent."
