Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has put forward a call for expedited action regarding the "Sanctuary City" ordinance aimed at enhancing protections for the city's immigrant communities. The urgency of the issue was highlighted over a weekend of intensive collaboration between the Mayor and City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, which resulted in a prompt submission to the City Council, as detailed by the Mayor's Office website.
"Especially in the face of growing threats to the immigrant communities here in Los Angeles, I stand with the people of this city," Mayor Bass stated, affirming the city's commitment to its immigrant population. In a move to swiftly enact critical protections, the Mayor's Office thanked City Attorney Feldstein Soto for her contributions and named several council members, including Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Councilmembers Nithya Raman, Hugo Soto-Martinez, and Eunisses Hernandez, as key allies in this legislative effort. Addressing the urgency, the Mayor added that "This moment demands urgency," and echoed the sentiment that protecting immigrants was essential to bolster the communal and municipal fabrics of Los Angeles.
