A lucky Powerball player in Los Angeles was just one number away from hitting the jackpot on Monday night’s drawing. The ticket, sold at Teddy's Liquor Store located at 2112 S. La Brea Avenue in the Mid-City area, matched five of the six numbers, NBC Los Angeles reports. Although the Powerball eluded the winner, the ticket is still valued at a hefty $161,556.

While tickets that match five numbers are typically worth $1 million or $2 million in other states, California's pari-mutuel payout system resulted in a lower prize for this winner, according to NBC Los Angeles. Pari-mutuel means the winnings are determined by the number of tickets sold and the number of high-tier winners, leading to varied prize amounts. The winning numbers reported by the California Lottery were 6, 18, 33, 48, and 53 with a Powerball of 21.

With no grand prize winners from Monday's drawing, the Powerball jackpot is expected to climb to approximately $75 million for Wednesday's game, with a cash value estimated at $35.4 million, shared by The Fresno Bee. The national Powerball game, which hasn't seen a jackpot winner since October 23, will once again test the luck of players across participating states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
