Charges of capital murder have been filed against a man following a shootout at Humble's Mustang Inn Motel that left one man dead and a woman critically wounded. Click2Houston reported that the Humble Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on Thursday last week to discover 42-year-old Julian Coronado deceased in room 205 and Brenda Burdick suffering from a gunshot wound.
Law enforcement quickly detained 36-year-old Frank Orenday near the scene. Orenday, found with a handgun in his pocket, claimed he acted in self-defense. However, his statement partially contradicts motel surveillance footage, which shows him firing at the deceased and the injured woman.
A witness, who had previously hosted Orenday, described the events leading to the shooting. She said Orenday had overstayed his welcome and refused to leave without money for a ride home. The fatal encounter occurred when Coronado and Burdick arrived to help the woman, and a confrontation escalated. Court documents state that Orenday then pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds.
Motel surveillance footage confirmed that Orenday shot Coronado and struck Burdick as she tried to flee. The video also showed him returning to the room to grab a backpack and search Coronado’s wallet before leaving. Officers found the crime scene on the 17000 block of Highway 59 Freeway around 12:30 p.m. and quickly detained a man matching the shooter's description, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Orenday is currently held at the Harris County Jail on a $500,000 bond, awaiting a court appearance scheduled for December 12. The investigation, still active, continues to gather further evidence as authorities piece together the circumstances that led up to the deadly altercation at Mustang Inn Motel.
