A grim scene unfolded in Northeast Charlotte on Tuesday evening when a man was fatally shot inside a local convenience store. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has since arrested 52-year-old Sharrieff Ellis Gray in connection to the killing.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., police were called to the scene at the Fast Mart on Tom Hunter Road, where Ronnie Leon Ruth, 53, was found deceased. Witnesses observed a swift act of violence that left community members shocked and saddened. "It was a very quick entry, and just an immediate act of violence, and left the area,” Major J.D. Thomas stated, as per an WSOCTV report.
Two days after the incident, with the assistance of the SWAT team and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), Gray was apprehended and charged with murder. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has emphasized that this remains an active investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact them at 704-432-TIPS, according to WBTV.
The motivation behind the shooting appears to be a puzzle, with Major Thomas describing the event as "Just very brazen, violent act that happened inside," in a statement obtained by WCCB Charlotte. Police officials declared that robbery did not appear to be a motive, and there was no preceding altercation or assault before the shooting. “Just a tragic incident, did not appear to be an altercation that led up to it from inside the store,” Major J.D. Thomas said in an interview.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the identification of the suspect, as Thomas indicated they had "a high likelihood of identifying the suspect due to the video quality," according to WSCOCTV.
As the community reels from the incident, law enforcement continues piecing together the event's circumstances. Authorities have not released further details about the possible relationship between Gray and Ruth or what could have precipitated such a sudden act of violence.
