A disruptive incident aboard a flight from Milwaukee to Dallas has led to federal charges against a 29-year-old man, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton. Abdul-al-Jabbar Oloruntoba Olaiya is accused of assault and intimidation of a flight crew, a charge that could see him facing up to two decades behind bars.
Details provided by the U.S. Attorney's Office assert that about two hours into the flight, Mr. Olaiya, demanding to be let off the aircraft, insisted he was "captain of this flight" despite being merely a passenger. During his attempt to breach the plane's exit, Mr. Olaiya clashed with a flight attendant, leaving her wounded in the conflict.
The altercation was witnessed by fellow passengers who intervened, subduing and restraining Mr. Olaiya with duct tape around his wrists and ankles. While still half an hour to the destination, the flight crew elected to continue to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, securing a priority landing.
Following the plane's arrival, officers waiting at the scene took Mr. Olaiya off the aircraft and into custody for a mental health evaluation. A spokesperson from the U.S. Attorney's Office underscored that "a criminal complaint is merely an allegation of criminal conduct, not evidence." The detained man has the presumption of innocence until and if he is proven guilty in court.
The operation was a joint venture between the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Dallas Field Office and the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Department of Public Safety, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Levi Thomas heading the prosecution. No further comments have been made as the case is still pending trial.
