
A tragic loss of life has occurred at a homeless camp in southeast Austin, with a man fatally stabbed Sunday evening. According to CBS Austin, police received reports at around 6:31 p.m. of a man lying on the ground bleeding from what appeared to be stab wounds. The incident took place in the 1900 block of East William Cannon Drive. Responding officers discovered 39-year-old Elijah Martinez with a chest wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital but sadly pronounced dead by 8:12 p.m.
Information at the time of the incident was unclear, and detectives were trying to piece together if Martinez had fallen or if he indeed had been attacked. It was later established, through surveillance footage, that he was stabbed at a homeless encampment adjacent to an AutoZone store. This revelation was shared by KVUE, noting that several individuals were seen fleeing the area post-incident. As of now, authorities have not identified any suspects nor have they made any arrests related to the stabbing.
The Austin Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding this case to come forward. They've requested that tips be directed to 512-974-TIPS or through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. Anonymity is insured for tipsters, and there is a reward of up to $1,000 being offered for information that might lead to an arrest in the case. This incident has unfortunately marked Austin's 59th homicide of the year 2024.
As the investigation unfolds, detectives continue to sift through evidence, hoping to quickly apprehend those involved to bring some semblance of justice for Mr. Martinez and his loved ones.
