A fatal collision early this morning led to a complete shutdown of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Putnam County, leaving authorities to manage the aftermath and commuters to seek alternative routes. The incident, involving a white Kia Spectra and another unknown vehicle, occurred near exit 286, also known as Willow Avenue, around 6:10 a.m., according to WSMV.
The man behind the wheel of the Kia Spectra succumbed to his injuries on the scene, as per details from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The condition of the other individuals involved in the crash has not been disclosed, nor has the identity of the deceased or the cause of the collision. The Tennessee Department of Transportation swiftly reacted, closing one lane to allow investigators to work, and managed to reopen the roadway to traffic roughly two hours later, as reported by WKRN.
Responders from the Cookeville Police Department and the Putnam County Fire Department were on site to address the incident and ensure safety. The Cookeville Police Department issued an early traffic alert on their official Facebook page, urging the public to avoid the area and indicating that Interstate 40 Eastbound at Willow Ave was "currently closed due to a traffic crash." The same post advised drivers to find alternative paths for their morning commute, a move to mitigate further disruption and delay.
While the eastbound lanes have since been reopened, the Tennessee Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the specifics of the crash. Details that may shine a light on the incidences that led up to the crash and possibly provide insight into how tragedies such as these can be avoided in the future.
