The National Weather Service (NWS) is making efforts to clarify how we speak about cold weather dangers, with a shift in terminology that kicks in on October 1, 2024; no longer will we see "Wind Chill" advisories—these are now updated to terms like "Extreme Cold Watch" and "Cold Weather Advisory," part of the NWS's Hazard Simplification initiative to make public warnings more straightforward and actionable for all.
With the updated terminology, "Wind Chill Watch" becomes "Extreme Cold Watch," "Wind Chill Warning" is updated to "Extreme Cold Warning," and "Wind Chill Advisory" will now be known as "Cold Weather Advisory," this is a move by the NWS to sidestep confusion and help people to better understand and prepare for hazardous conditions.
