As the festive season quickly approaches and the sparkling lights begin to adorn the houses across Mankato, there's an eco-friendly initiative residents should take note of. The City of Mankato is urging locals to keep sustainability in mind amid the holiday cheer by recycling their old or broken holiday lights. Starting Monday, December 2, until Friday, January 3, those strings of lights that have lost their twinkle can be dropped off at a special collection bin at the Intergovernmental Center, located at 10 Civic Center Plaza.
A call to action for environmental stewardship during the holiday season, this program offers a simple way for the community to prevent unnecessary waste. "Got holiday lights that aren't shining like they used to? Keep the season green by recycling your old or broken string lights!" a social media post from the City of Mankato, Minnesota Government stated. This initiative not only encourages residents to be mindful of their environmental impact but also to easily partake in promoting a sustainable holiday tradition.
Disposing of electronic waste can often be problematic, with many components being non-biodegradable and potentially hazardous. Traditional garbage disposal means these items often end up in landfills, causing contamination and pollution. The holiday lights recycling program appears to seamlessly align with broader environmental efforts to encourage sustainable practices within the community while still celebrating the season's traditions.
Residents are reminded to remove all light bulbs from their strings before recycling and to ensure no garland or other decorations are attached. In an effort to truly keep the season green, Mankato's recycling program aims to reduce the environmental footprint of holiday celebrations.
