Hawaii Governor Josh Green has confirmed Matthias Kusch for a full two-year term as State Representative for House District 1, as announced yesterday. Kusch, who stepped into the role following the untimely passing of Representative Mark Nakashima in August, will continue to represent the residents of this district, which encompasses areas including Hāmākua, a portion of Hilo, and Kaūmana, according to the Office of the Governor.
In the statement released by the Office of the Governor, Green highlighted Kusch's "steadfast commitment to the residents of House District 1." The Governor remarked on Kusch’s multifaceted background which, apart from legislative responsibilities, includes the roles of a community advocate, retired fire department Battalion Chief, farmer, and an engaged leader in local initiatives.
Kusch, expressing his appreciation for the reinstatement, was quoted, saying, "I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this responsibility by Governor Green and the Democratic Party." He affirmed his commitment to advocate for local issues, with a particular focus on affordable housing, sustainable agriculture, and public safety – areas which he has been active in for years, as per the Office of the Governor.
Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura recognized the value Kusch has brought to the Legislative body thus far. "In recent months, working alongside Representative Kusch, we have seen his dedication and readiness to serve his island home," she said, indicating an optimistic outlook for the Legislature tour during the upcoming 33rd General Session. Kusch has previously been acknowledged for his efforts in affordable housing, as well as being a founding member of Hilo Bayfront Trails and contributing to the Windward Planning Commission, as reported by the Office of the Governor.
With Kusch at the helm, constituents of House District 1 are expecting to see a continuation of the efforts laid down by his predecessor. Representative Kusch's reappointment is a signal of the administration's confidence in his capability to represent the distinct needs of the communities in Hāmākua, Hilo, and Kāumana with continued integrity and dedication.
