Heads up, Maui drivers: Starting tomorrow, expect some slowdowns on your commute. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is kicking off a series of short lane closures for pavement quality checks across 13 state highways on the island. According to the HDOT's announcement, the inspections will help the department stay ahead of the curve on road maintenance, identifying issues before the tarmac sings the blues.

The work, which involves scooping up cylindrical samples of asphalt to measure their thickness, density, and overall heartiness, will take place during daylight hours when most are hustling to work or school. Expect one lane to be down for the count for up to 45 minutes at a time, with operations scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic disruptions will begin tomorrow and span till Wednesday, then pause for the weekend before resuming December 2 through December 5.

Here's the line-up for the affected highways and dates to mark on your calendars—don't say we didn't warn you. Tomorrow, lane closures will impact Kūʻihēlani Highway, Maui Veterans Highway, Kahului Beach Road, and Kaʻahumanu Avenue, just to name a few. The following day, Piʻilani Highway and North Kīhei Road join the mix. The sampling spree wraps up on December 5 with several points along Honoapiʻilani Highway feeling the pinch. For the full schedule, check out the HDOT website.
