Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has been spearheading an initiative that aims to tackle one of the city's most persistent issues - homelessness. According to the Mayor's Office, two new Inside Safe operations were successfully concluded this week; one was stationed in South Los Angeles close to a Special Education Center while the other operated in Koreatown near small businesses. "Our urgency will not stop as we continue to house Angelenos living in tents and in RV's and save lives," said Mayor Bass, emphasizing the initiative's dual goals of rescuing individuals from the streets and reviving the local streetscapes.

The collaborative efforts of the Mayor's Office with Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson in South Los Angeles and Councilmember Heather Hutt in Koreatown have proven to be fruitful with more than 3,000 Angelenos who have come inside thus far through Inside Safe, homelessness in the city has seen a decrease for the first time in years, with a remarkable decline in street homelessness—a 10% decrease in the City of Los Angeles. "The sense of relief someone has when they are offered shelter is substantial," "Due to this operation, 19 people who were sleeping by the freeway underpass now have shelter and connections to resources," Council President Harris-Dawson told the mayor's team.

Further results from the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count illustrate the broader impact of the recent measures taken to mitigate homelessness in the city. The count shows a significant 38% decrease in makeshift shelters and notes that the number of individuals moving into permanent housing is the highest it's ever been. The reduction is not limited to specific areas, with reports indicating that tent encampments have declined across every council district.
