Metra has announced the return of its special holiday-themed trains slated to begin their festive routes on November 30th, bringing a touch of seasonal cheer to the Chicago commuter experience. According to NBC Chicago, these trains will service six lines and provide a unique holiday atmosphere complete with decorations and characters such as Santa and Mrs. Claus.
For those seeking to partake in this merry journey, tickets are priced at $5 and must be acquired in advance through Metra's digital channels. They are scheduled to go on sale on November 11 at noon, with an anticipation of high demand and potential sellouts. The special holiday trains will operate on select Saturdays across the Electric Line, the BNSF, Rock Island, Milwaukee District-North, Union Pacific Northwest, and Union Pacific North lines, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Injecting a bit of North Pole magic into the daily commute, the Metra Electric Line transforms Millennium Station into a winter wonderland, complete with holiday treats and surprises. Notably, other downtown Metra stations, such as Union Station and Ogilvie, will also feature festive adornments to amplify the holiday spirit amongst travelers, officials said.
The holiday trains offer the flexibility for passengers to return to their initial boarding location or to maximize their downtown stay and utilize their ticket for any scheduled train that day. Riders young and old can look forward to festivities on these dates: the Metra Electric Line on November 30, the BNSF Line on December 7, additional lines such as Rock Island, Milwaukee District North, and Union Pacific Northwest on December 14, followed by the Metra Electric and Union Pacific North lines on December 21, shedding light on routes and schedules crucial for planning holiday excursions.
While Metra has declared its holiday train schedule, the Chicago Transit Authority has yet to reveal specifics for its own holiday train, traditionally adorned with Santa and his reindeer, continuing a city-wide anticipation for the season's public transportation traditions.
