In a case that highlights the serious issue of human trafficking, 41-year-old Prenentice Mack Orr of Wyoming, Michigan was arrested on charges including felony torture, felony prostitution/transporting persons, and felony human trafficking/forced labor, with a bond set at $3 million following an incident at a Southfield hotel.
As reported by Audacy, Orr's arrest came after he allegedly trafficked a 32-year-old Georgia woman for about two weeks; the woman had encountered Orr when she was homeless, he subsequently forced her to perform sexual acts across several cities including Grand Rapids and other southeast Michigan locations, not only depriving her of basic needs such as adequate food but also forcing her into a controlled regimen where she had to shower and brush her teeth five times a day.
Audacy's coverage details an alarming twist, where the woman was only allowed a liquid diet of coffee and sea moss to induce weight loss, as per the victim's statement to police. The suspect had also taken steps to isolate her completely by confiscating her ID, cell phone, and credit cards, and he exerted further control by keeping the money she earned from forced prostitution.
In a statement released during a press conference and documented by FOX 2 Detroit, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren detailed the suspect's modus operandi, including the allegation that Orr was with two women who he forced into a 'lifestyle' of trafficking and was doing this with his 4-year-old son in an adjacent hotel room when he was arrested, the officers found the young child and he has since been placed into child protective services, and police are working to locate the child's mother.
The victim's brave escape was initiated by a plan to retrieve cellphone charges left in Orr's car, buying her a moment away from him to seek help from a hotel employee who then contacted the authorities, her quick thinking led to her waiting in a laundry room for the officers to arrive, "I was tricked into a sex trafficking situation . . . I'm trying not to cry, but I'm scared," she disclosed in the 911 call as reported by The Detroit News.
Orr, who according to police has a significant criminal background with convictions for armed robbery, pimping, drug trafficking, and domestic violence dating back to 1999, remains in custody. As Chief Barren expressed, "Let this bond and these significant charges send a clear message," he told The Detroit News. Orr is scheduled for a probable cause conference next Thursday.
