On Saturday, the north side community of Milwaukee gathered to remember 2-year-old Angelo Berry, who was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle near 60th and Hustis. The incident occurred on Wednesday, just south of Good Hope, according to FOX6 News.
The boy reportedly ran into traffic and was hit, leading to his death later at a hospital. "I just heard a scream from down the block and I immediately heard like three or four ambulances come across the block," Shaquan Jefferson, a local resident, told FOX6 News on the day of the crash. In a related coverage by CBS 58, neighbor Tameka Moss pointed out the speeding problem in the area and called for slower driving and more caution on the streets. "They do need to slow it down," said Moss. "Sometimes you have to wait to get in your car before you get in because you never know if your door will get hit or if you'll get hit."
The driver, a 41-year-old man, was arrested at the scene. Furthermore, a 25-year-old man faced arrest for child neglect relating to the case. Both are awaiting criminal charges to be referred by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, as reports from multiple sources confirm. The charges have yet to formally materialize against either individual.
At the vigil, people expressed their sadness for Angelo Berry. "This is for my Baby Blue. We love you forever and ever," Berry's mother was quoted saying in a report by WISN. "You know we never played about you ever. You are in a better place right now and we are going to try to stay strong down here for you." Community members and family described the child as their "guardian angel," and the nickname "Baby Blue" was fondly used, a testament to his bright blue eyes.
