Model train fans are filling Milwaukee's Baird Center this weekend as Trainfest 2026 sets up more than 50 operating model train displays and over 250 vendor booths across the downtown convention space. The show runs Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, drawing hobbyists and families to 400 W Wisconsin Ave.
Hundreds of Booths, One Massive Weekend
The Trainfest event takes place November 7 & 8 at the Baird Center, where it has long been a fixture for Milwaukee's model railroading community. As reported by CBS58, the weekend event is expected to bring together hundreds of vendors and model railroad displays under one roof.
The scale of the vendor floor is hard to miss. Per nmra.org, Trainfest features “50+ operating model train displays in many different sizes and scales,” alongside “over 250 booths filling over 500 tables” of model trains, parts and accessories for sale.
A Free Ride and a Hosting Change
Families attending won't just be looking at trains behind glass. The event listing on eventcreate.com advertises a “FREE riding train for kids,” giving younger visitors a hands-on reason to tag along for the weekend.
This year's show is being run by the National Model Railroad Association, which took over as the event's producer last year, according to trains.com. The site reported that Trainfest 2026 “will be hosted by the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), which became the show's producer last year.”
How Big Is the Show, Exactly?
Just how much floor space Trainfest occupies depends on who you ask. The NMRA's own materials describe the event as “utilizing 170,000 sq. ft. of trains,” while Milwaukee Magazine offers a different total, reporting that “the displays make up about 60,000 square feet of the show's 188,000 total.” Either way, it's a sprawling footprint for a hobby show, with the model railroad layouts themselves making up only a portion of the overall space.
A Milwaukee Tradition Nearly a Century in the Making
Trainfest's local roots run deep. Milwaukee Magazine notes that the show is “now run by the National Model Railroad Association – itself founded in Milwaukee in 1935,” tying this weekend's event to a hobby organization with nine decades of history in the city. That lineage helps explain why Trainfest has become an annual draw for both serious collectors and curious families looking for something to do this weekend at the Baird Center.
