Following a recent spate of violence in Minneapolis, St. Paul Police have apprehended a man accused of two separate shootings in Minneapolis that resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed that the suspect was arrested following a third incident in St. Paul, where he pointed a gun at officers and was subsequently shot by the police. He is currently under medical care in the hospital. St. Paul Police Department reported the arrest took place after they responded to a shots-fired call in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood.
The two Minneapolis shootings include a fatal incident at a homeless encampment on Snelling Avenue and a second shooting on Columbus Avenue. According to Chief O'Hara's statements released by Minneapolis Police Department's bulletin, post-arrest investigations are underway to ensure the correct charges are brought forth in partnership with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. "MPD investigators will now work diligently with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to see appropriate criminal charges are filed and this man is held accountable," said Chief O'Hara. A correction was later issued regarding the number of homicides and injuries, with the toll rising to three deceased and three injured due to a subsequent death resulting from the earlier incident.
Details about the first shooting, provided by the Minneapolis Police Department, indicate that on October 27th, two men were pronounced dead at the scene of a triple shooting at an encampment along the 4400 block between Hiawatha Avenue and Snelling Avenue. A third victim, a woman, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but ultimately succumbed to her wounds. The second incident occurred the following day on Columbus Avenue, where a man was discovered with a critical gunshot injury and was rushed to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital. The suspect was not found at the scene.
Earl Bennett has been charged with three counts of Murder in connection with these shootings, after a woman who was hospitalized from the initial shooting died from her injuries. The news of the woman's death and Bennett's charges were disclosed on November 3rd, as reported by the Minneapolis Police Department. The grim reality of urban violence has once again pushed a community into mourning and sparked a collaborative effort by law enforcement agencies to navigate the complexities of criminal justice in the aftermath of such events.
