A Modesto resident has been handed a nearly six-year prison sentence for drug trafficking, official sources have confirmed. Lupe Aime Busio-Valencia, 43, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for her role in a conspiracy to distribute significant quantities of methamphetamine and heroin, as announced by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
Busio-Valencia was apprehended on July 22, 2020, along with Jose Garcia Herrera, 63, when they attempted to make a drug delivery. The two were caught with 10 pounds of methamphetamine and three kilograms of heroin, which were ingeniously stashed in a hidden compartment under the driver’s seat, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Herrera, however, has since become a fugitive after failing to show up for a scheduled court appearance.
The investigation that led to the sentencing was a concerted effort involving Homeland Security Investigations and the Modesto Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie Stokman and Justin Lee. According to an official statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Busio-Valencia's sentencing reflects the judicial system's ongoing commitment to combat the trafficking of narcotics.
While Busio-Valencia now faces the consequences of her involvement in the drug trade, the co-defendant, Garcia Herrera, remains at large. Despite his current status as a fugitive, the charges pending against Herrera are, as always, merely allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Anyone with information regarding Herrera's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the authorities.
