The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has made public the body-worn camera footage from a recent officer-involved shooting, an act of transparency in response to an incident that unfolded on the night of September 8th. The video release is accessible as the NOPD's Public Integrity Bureau looks into the confrontation, witnessed first-hand through officers' lenses in the 3200 block of Bienville Street, NOPD News reports.
Officers initially responded to a domestic disturbance call and encountered a man identified as 29-year-old Justin Martin, who appeared unarmed during a calm exchange on the street. However, as officers approached his residence, Martin reportedly brandished a firearm. Released footage captures the sequence in detail, showing that despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Martin allegedly engaged in a firefight with officers before being shot. An NOPD officer with Emergency Medical Responder training provided him with medical attention, according to NOPD News.
Martin, since discharged from the hospital, has been charged with numerous offenses, including domestic battery and aggravated assault on a peace officer, as detailed by NOPD's press release.
The criminal investigation, based on a review of dash and body-worn camera footage, has led to charges against Martin, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, among other accusations. The Public Integrity Bureau forwarded its findings to the District Attorney's Office on October 8. The administrative review remains ongoing, highlighting the multi-level scrutiny applied to such incidents.
