The Stephen M. Morris Behavioral Health Center will break ground in Cabarrus County on November 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will take place at 1000 Progress Place in Concord. The new center is part of efforts to expand access to mental health services in the community and address the increasing need for behavioral health care, according to the Cabarrus County.
The new 59,300-square-foot facility will provide a variety of services aimed at reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes. It will include a behavioral health urgent care for both children and adults, a psychiatric residential treatment facility for children and adolescents, and a crisis program for younger populations. The project received a $32.5 million state grant for construction, with support from NC Sen. Paul Newton and NC Rep. Kristin Baker. The center is named after Steve Morris, a longtime advocate for mental health services in the area, as reported by the Cabarrus County.
The new behavioral health facility in Cabarrus County will feature speakers such as Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners Chair Steve Morris, Assistant County Manager Dr. Aalece Pugh, and Behavioral Health Director Dr. Kamilah McKissick, along with NC State Rep. Kristin Baker, M.D., and other local representatives. The facility will be operated by Monarch and staffed with program directors, nurses, therapists, and other professionals. Designed by human eXperience and built by Messer Construction, the center aims to provide comprehensive mental health services in a modern, welcoming environment. The project is a partnership between the Cabarrus County Behavioral Health Department, Cabarrus Health Alliance, and Daymark Recovery Services, and is expected to open by late 2026.
